At a press conference on May 10, 2010, the Survey Report on Software Piracy in China in 2009 was released. According to this report, the software piracy rate in China last year decreased from 15%% to 12%, based on the value calculated by the market price.
It was reported that the market-price-calculated value of pirated software in China in 2009 was CNY128.9 billion yuan, which is somewhat at the same level as the previous year. But, assuming that the parameters of market environment are the same and value of the pirated software is calculated at the present market price, the software piracy rate in 2009 came down from 15% to 12%. If the value is calculated according to the actual price of pirated software products, the piracy rate in 2009 decreased from 29% to 28%.
According to the report, if the calculation is based on the sets of software that should have been purchased for installation, the software piracy rate decreased from 47% in 2008 to 45% in 2009. During the period of 2005-2009, the piracy rates of operating system software were 81%、68%、39%、29%、27% respectively.
The continuous sharp decrease of software piracy rate over the past years was the result of the extensive use of free software and low-price homemade software and the continuous improvement of the innovation capacity of software industry in China.
